Saturna Capital to Make ETF Debut with Four Actively Managed Halal Investment Strategies
Saturna Capital (“Saturna”) is entering the ETF market with the launch of four actively managed exchange-traded funds that invest in accordance with Islamic principles. They include: The Amana Equity Income ETF (Ticker: AMEI), Amana Growth ETF (AMGR), Amana Developing World ETF (AMEM), and Amana Sukuk ETF (AMSU).
The approximately $10 billion1 Bellingham, Washington-based asset management firm is targeting a June launch for the new ETFs which will mirror existing Amana mutual fund strategies.
ETF Objectives and Strategies
Each ETF is designed to target a distinct segment of the market while remaining aligned with Islamic investment principles.
The Amana Equity Income ETF (AMEI) seeks current income and capital preservation, with current income its primary objective. It will invest in dividend-paying equities, including foreign companies, and will be managed by Executive Vice President Monem Salam, Quantitative Lead Bryce Fegley, and Senior Investment Analyst Levi Zurbrugg.
The Amana Growth ETF (AMGR) seeks Long-term capital growth, consistent with Islamic principles. The Fund invests in common stocks, including foreign stocks. Investment decisions are made in accordance with Islamic principles. It will be managed by Chief Investment Officer Scott Klimo, Monem Salam, and Senior Investment Analyst Jason Mitchell.
The Amana Developing World ETF (AMEM) seeks Long-term capital growth, consistent with Islamic principles. Under normal circumstances, the Fund invests at least 80% of total net assets in common stocks of companies. It will be managed by Monem Salam, Scott Klimo, and Levi Zurbrugg.
The Amana Sukuk ETF (AMSU) seeks Capital preservation and current income, consistent with Islamic principles. Capital preservation is its primary objective. It will be managed by Fixed Income Lead Patrick Drum and Senior Investment Analyst Elizabeth Alm.
The Amana ETF strategies favor investing in companies trading below the advisor’s assessment of intrinsic value, which is typically characterized by strong balance sheets, proven business models, and relatively low price/earnings multiples. Portfolios are actively monitored and the funds will not engage in high turnover or speculative trading.
Halal Investment Framework
Saturna’s Amana Funds have a long-standing focus on faith-based investing, and the ETFs will adhere to the same halal investment principles used throughout its existing lineup.
These guidelines prohibit interest-based income and restrict investment in industries such as alcohol, tobacco, pork products, gambling, weapons, pornography, interest-based banks and financial associations and insurers.
