Saturna’s Dan Kim on Money Life with Chuck Jaffe Podcast

News Article

Bellingham, WA, March 4, 2024 – Dan Kim, a portfolio manager and senior investment analyst at Saturna Capital, joined syndicated financial columnist Chuck Jaffe on the Money Life with Chuck Jaffe podcast, a daily personal finance talk show.

Jaffe and Kim delved into the nuanced investment strategy that sets Saturna Capital apart in the financial landscape. Kim emphasized Saturna's disciplined investing approach. "We're looking for high-quality businesses with strong balance sheets, accelerating cash flows, and recession-resilient business models," Kim said. According to Kim, this selective approach, which focuses on businesses' financial health and operational strength, is meant to ensure they are well-equipped to deliver consistent, long-term returns to investors.

Kim also highlighted Saturna’s flexible investment time horizons approach. "We don't box ourselves into using traditional investment time horizons . . . if the opportunity warrants a six to seven-year time horizon and we have the conviction to underwrite that type of trajectory, we're going to evaluate the candidate using seven years," he said.

In the show’s “lightning round,” where guests offer insights regarding stock picks provided by audience members, Kim emphasized his market perception versus reality process. "Alpha is better defined as the delta between market perception and reality . . . the greater this perception gap, the greater the alpha potential." He stressed the importance of identifying these gaps, especially in international markets, where he believes "the biggest and juiciest opportunities are actually overseas."

Dan Kim, CFA®, is a senior investment analyst and the portfolio manager of Sextant International Fund. He joined Saturna Capital in March of 2023.
