CNBC Article Quotes Saturna Capital’s Dan Kim

News Article

Bellingham, WA, June 3, 2024 – Dan Kim, CFA, portfolio manager and senior investment analyst at Saturna Capital, was quoted in the CNBC article “14 analysts upgraded this global AI chip stock in the past 2 weeks,” which was published on May 13, 2024.

The article examined the artificial intelligence (AI) boom and the high demand for advanced chips and processors, with the global chip stock Taiwan Semiconductor a favorite among analysts. Mr. Kim commented on US-China trade restrictions, and whether such restrictions could pose a risk to investors. While Mr. Kim acknowledged that “every time US/China trade restriction news comes out, the semi group (including Taiwan Semiconductor) generally gets punished,” he noted “in reality the opposite is happening.”

“Without access to leading edge equipment, China has to order more legacy equipment to keep up with the West,” said Mr. Kim. “This ‘inefficiency’ has been estimated to likely create an additional ~10% in equipment demand over time.”

Dan Kim, CFA®, is a senior investment analyst and the portfolio manager of Sextant International Fund. He joined Saturna Capital in March of 2023.
