Nicholas Kaiser MBA

Nicholas Kaiser, Chairman, was born in Bellingham in 1946. Mr. Kaiser graduated from Yale College, with a degree in economics and obtained his MBA from the University of Chicago in 1968, with dual majors in International Economics and Finance. Mr. Kaiser purchased control of Unified Management Corporation (Indianapolis) in 1976, and built it into a mid-sized investment management and brokerage firm. After selling Unified to a major insurance company, he returned to Bellingham and founded Saturna Capital in 1989.

Mr. Kaiser and his children control Saturna Capital through its voting stock. He is Saturna's global investment strategist. He serves Amana Mutual Funds Trust as trustee and president.

Mr. Kaiser's industry activities include service with the Investment Company Institute (past Governor), CFA Institute (past chapter president), Financial Planning Association (past chapter president), and No-Load Mutual Fund Association (past national president). He currently serves on the volunteer boards of Franklin Academy and the Mt. Baker Foundation. He supports a range of non-profit activities, such as the Kaiser Professorship in International Business at Western Washington University. A commercial pilot (retired), ocean sailor, and avid skier, he reads and travels extensively.

Mr. Kaiser was Northwest Business Monthly's Business Person of the Year in 2006, and received Whatcom Business Alliance's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.

Craig Churman MBA, AIF®

Craig Churman, Vice President, Product Development, joined Saturna in August 2011. He is a graduate of West Virginia University, with a BS in Business Administration, and has an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Churman earned the Accredited Investment Fiduciary ® Designation from the Center for Fiduciary Studies in 2013. Prior to Saturna, he spent ten years in sales and product development at PNC Global Investment Services, transitioning to Bank of New York Mellon when it acquired PNC GIS in July 2010. With over thirty years of experience in financial services, Mr. Churman has held positions in client services, product development, mergers and acquisitions, and finance, at firms such as Federated Investors, BISYS, and Invesmart. A native of Pittsburgh, PA, Mr. Churman is the father of two, an avid Pittsburgh sports fan, and an active supporter of mission work, particularly Youth With A Mission, an international volunteer organization.

Chris Fankhauser
Vice President

Chris Fankhauser, Chief Operations Officer, is a 1995 graduate in Political Science from Western Washington University. His adaptability and problem solving skills were developed in travel industry jobs before joining Saturna Capital in December 1996. Starting as a part-time system operator, Mr. Fankhauser is now responsible for the daily operation of investor and brokerage services as well as fund accounting. His favorite leisure activities are running, skiing, cooking and reading.

Jane Carten MBA
Vice President

Jane Carten, President and Director, joined Saturna Capital in June 1997. Ms. Carten graduated from Western Washington University with an MBA and undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Business. As President, Jane oversees Saturna's daily operations and directs Saturna's internal and external information systems, managing the technology and marketing activities. She also directs Saturna’s continuing education program and the philanthropic efforts of the firm. Ms. Carten is active in the Bellingham Bay Rotary and is a member of the Young Presidents' Organization; she is a former member of the Whatcom Museum Children's Advisory Board. She is a founder and former director of the nonprofit OpenAccess Internet Services and is a Bellingham Sister Cities member and contributor. She enjoys her family, snow-boarding, and wildlife, as well as international travel and fine and theatre arts.

Marion R. ("Robin") Foote MBA
Independent Director

Robin Foote is an experienced business executive, consultant, private investor and corporate director.  She currently serves on the Boards of five private companies and chairs several Board Committees.  She has previously served more than a half-dozen other companies in a similar capacity, until such time as each was either sold or merged.

In her corporate career, Robin was as an early pioneer and ongoing champion of the use of analytically derived insights to augment customer and shareholder value, and she was known for her ability to create programs to capture this value, ultimately doing so as Group Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Bank of America’s retail bank.  She also developed the strategic rationale for numerous bank and non-bank acquisitions and led the post-acquisition integration for several of these. 

Robin began her consulting career with McKinsey & Company, and, in 2001, established her own firm (Randolph Partners), which she subsequently merged into Novantas, where she served as a partner through 2012.  Since then, she has focused on using her experience and skills in service of entrepreneurial activity.  She is a member of the Keiretsu Forum Northwest, and an active angel investor. 

Throughout her career, Ms. Foote has served variously as Trustee, Director, Board President and/or Treasurer for non-profit organizations engaged in housing, healthcare/medical research and education as well as for a variety of professional associations.

Robin graduated magna cum laude from Smith College with a degree in Economics and with High Distinction and as a Baker Scholar from Harvard Business School.  She is also a graduate of Northwestern University Kellogg School’s ‘Women Director Development Program’ and the Leadership Greater Chicago program.

Kalen Hanna MBA, CPA®

Kalen Hanna, Chief Financial Officer, joined Saturna Capital in August 2009. He earned a BA in International Business from Western Washington University in 2006 and an MBA in Finance from Strayer University in 2010. Previously, he worked as a branch manager of an industrial supply company. Since joining Saturna, Kalen has been a Fund Accountant and a Systems Analyst.  From 2012 to 2018, Kalen lead Saturna's Employer Services department. In his free time he enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, working on projects around the house, cooking, and running.

Owaiz Dadabhoy
Assistant Vice President

Owaiz Dadabhoy, Director of Islamic Investing & Islamic Investment Group Manager, joined Saturna Capital in August of 2008. Raised in Southern California, he earned a BA in Business Administration from California State University at Fullerton. Mr. Dadabhoy spent over 15 years at Wells Fargo and was most recently a District Manager in Long Beach. Prior to that, he was Senior Sales Director for Wells Fargo’s Wealth Management group in Los Angeles where he managed six Sales Directors and led a team of over 200 licensed bankers. Mr. Dadabhoy is active with charitable and community activities, co-founding the UPLIFT Charitable Corporation in 2006. He is married with two children and enjoys spending time with his family in various outdoor activities.

Michael Lewis
Chief Compliance Officer

Michael Lewis, Chief Compliance Officer, joined Saturna Capital in September 2012. A life-long resident of the Pacific Northwest, Mr. Lewis earned a degree in Business Administration with concentrations in accounting and finance from the University of Washington. He serves as the compliance officer for Saturna Capital, the Amana Mutual Funds Trust, and the Saturna Investment Trust. Prior to Saturna, Mr. Lewis was the District Director for FINRA's Seattle office. He has over twenty-five years experience in the securities industry and was a frequent speaker and panelist on compliance and regulatory issues at industry conferences. His favorite activity away from the office is spending time with his wife and three children boating, camping, or hiking.

Jacob Stewart CRCP™
Bank Secrecy Act Officer

Jacob Stewart, Compliance Officer, joined Saturna Capital in November 2007. He moved to Bellingham from Texas, where he obtained a BA in English Literature from Schreiner University in 2005. Jacob's work focuses on 1940 Act valuation issues, Bank Secrecy Act anti-money laundering compliance, and designing/implementing forensic testing regimes. In his spare time, he enjoys mountaineering, backcountry skiing, and racing different kinds of bicycles.
