Saturna Capital Expands Charitable Giving

Bellingham, WA (July 9, 2007) – Saturna Capital Corporation more than quadrupled its charitable giving for its 2007 fiscal year, making a total of $128,200 in donations and providing $33,550 in non-profit sponsorships. Saturna favors education, especially in international business, in its gifting decisions. Greater employee involvement has broadened the activities and institutions served. Organizations receiving the largest donations were Western Washington University, Boy Scouts of America, Current Industries, St. Paul's Episcopal School, Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association, Peaceful Communications, Slum Doctor Programme, and Islamic Relief.

Saturna allows employees to direct the majority of the firm’s donations by matching qualifying employee contributions dollar-for-dollar and by making charitable contributions to non-profit organizations in response to employee proposals.

President of Saturna Capital Corporation, Nick Kaiser explained, "We found many people at Saturna independently support charitable organizations and educational institutions, and wanted to endorse the importance of philanthropy and community service, so we expanded our giving."

Jim Gibson, Saturna's Chief Financial Officer, remarked, "The matching donations program is a wonderful benefit for me as a Saturna employee. It’s great to know I can double personal contributions, and I was particularly pleased with what we were able to accomplish for the local charities that mean the most to me. Along with several other employees, I presented my favorite charities with specific ideas about how the company could help, and they listened. Saturna is truly making a difference in the lives of a lot of people with this program, and I know there’s a deep appreciation for the company’s commitment. I feel it myself."

"This program has been rewarding for both the organizations granted funding, and the employees who have participated in the process. We have been able to help a wide variety of charities that our people have been supporting financially or in volunteer hours for years. We’re pleased to be able to demonstrate our support of our employees efforts’ in this manner," said Jane Carten, Chief Informing Officer.  Decisions by the charitable giving committee are designed to validate the good work of the recipients, avoid conflicts of interest, and favor organizations where our employees are actively involved.

"We look forward to years of success with our business so we may continue to participate in as many ways as possible. Helping our employees help others is an important aspect of the Saturna model and we intend to continue and improve these efforts," concluded Nick Kaiser. Mr. Kaiser and his family have been active in community gifting for many years.
