Bellingham, WA (October 31, 2011) — Saturna Capital Corporation, a US investment management company and adviser to the Amana Funds, the Sextant Funds, and the Idaho Tax-Exempt Fund, has received the Mutual Fund Education Alliance's Community Investment Award for 2011, along with American Century Investments, who tied for the top honor. This prestigious annual award recognizes the mutual fund industry's top corporate citizens who demonstrate exemplary contributions to the well-being of their communities.
In addition to the Community Investment Award, Saturna Capital received five other 2011 MFEA Star Awards, including the award for best Overall Retail Communications among firms in its asset category.
Jane Carten, Saturna Capital's president, CEO, and director of corporate philanthropy, accepted the award at the MFEA 2011 Star Awards Celebration on October 27, in Chicago.
"We are truly honored to receive the MFEA Community Investment Award. This great distinction rewards Saturna's deeply held commitment to philanthropy since the company was founded in 1989, particularly in the area of education," said Carten.
"Last year, we recognized a rare opportunity to make a significant, lasting impact on the academic landscape of Bellingham, Washington. Saturna undertook its most ambitious philanthropic campaign to date in leading the effort to build the St. Paul's Academy Upper School. This project supports our belief that educated citizens make better communities, and that educated shareowners make better investors. I thank Saturna's dedicated staff and the Bellingham community, whose broad and generous support and tireless commitment contributed to the success of our campaign."
Saturna Capital Corporation pledged over $2.5 million toward construction of the SPA Upper School, which galvanized the Bellingham, Washington, community around the project, and played a key role in securing $6 million in bank financing and over $1 million in private donations.
Saturna received the Best Retail Multi-Media Campaign award for its latest print and web campaign to promote retirement account products. Best Electronic Newsletter was awarded to the firm's monthly market commentary and analysis. The Idaho Tax-Exempt Fund's Annual Report to shareowners received best Retail Annual Report Award.
In the advisor communications category, Best Advisor Introduction Kit was awarded to the Amana Fund' "Building Investor Confidence Series." The kit offers web and print tools designed to help advisors better understand these investment products.
Since 2008, Saturna has received a total of 15 MFEA Star Awards recognizing communications excellence across a variety of media, from printed communications such as mutual fund annual reports and educational investor brochures, to websites and television commercials.
The MFEA Star Awards are unique in the mutual fund industry in that award winners are selected by their industry peers. Saturna was judged in the small asset category, comprised of investment companies that manage up to $5 billion in assets.
